Fashion vs. Louis & Coco

While browsing through several other blogs I couldn't help but notice that most of the blogs who have tons of followers are sort of a mini-Vogue issue with lots of Louis(es) and Coco(s) starring in them.

So the question is, do we need a reality check or just a quick check of our credit card limits?

Although I have to admit that most of those girls DO have an exquisite sense of fashion, I have a hard time believing that 90% of their somethingthousand followers do have the money it takes to dress like one of those girls. No, I'm not saying it like it's a bad thing. You don't have / need to be dressed in Haute Couture brands to be fashionable (or to feel fabulous and worthy).

I just cant help but wonder, is it the attraction to the unattainable that keeps girls / women so interested in those blogs?

And, finally, not to be a hypocrite, I also do love my Louis(es) and Coco(s) but I also love those 'no name' brands I get my dresses from.

A small experiment I've set up recently actually answered all of those questions. I had bought myself a nice, silk sequin dress from my favorite boutique a couple of weeks ago (for 180€ - no haute couture but still not 'cheap') and the feedback I got was amazing...ly confusing. Needless to say, everyone just loved the dress. They just seemed to love it more when I told them it's from HervĂ© Leger (Of course, I later told them about the experiment). Like I've said, they all loved the dress but the two whom I told it was from HL just couldn't stop talking about it / touching to feel its fabric and observe the flawless! stitching (their words, not mine).

At the end of the day, a dress is just a dress, isn't it? Or do you categorize your friends and relatives according to their names?

And, what happened to 'with great amount of money comes great responsibility'? Yes, I did steal that one from the Spiderman movie and changed it up a bit. Shouldn't people at some point (let's say after the tenth Chanel bag) just stop, take a step back and look around whether there's a greater cause they could spend the money for instead of purchasing their 11th CC bag or not?

What do you think?

  1. This is an interest topic,I know what you mean.
For me personally when I follow these blogs with thousands of followers,I simply love their sense of personal style, before I even realise wether or not theres big name labels in their clothes and accessories.
But I also think, that they must have huge wardrobes and must shop all the time to be able to do such fabulous outfit posts,I sure would love the money to be able to do that :D

Im following your blog14,for more hot topics :D

  2. Hah, that's what happens when I'm forced to stay in all day and start musing away. I guess that I was trying to say that looking fab in big name labels is definitely easier than looking fab in 'cheap' clothes - but hey, that's my opinion ;)

Loving your blog and following it as well.

  4. This is very good pondering (and I loved to read it :) ), in my opinion you're quite right - I think people get easily caught in blogosphere frenzy & spending (and I'm not saying I wouldn't be one of those).. They might follow those blogs for all the right reasons (amazing style those ladies have), but also the unattainable life they seem to live. People seem to admire brands, and not the clothes for what they are. Being a probably total hypocrite myself, but this is an issue I've been thinking too (spending less, along with some reality check). So thank your for your honesty!

    1. Nah, don't be so hard on yourself, you're not the only 'hypocrite' over here ;)
I too, enjoy taking a look at those blogs - it's only normal to admire pretty things, after all, isn't it?
Most of the times, it's just that I don't agree with the impression young girls get about life.
Unfortunately, life doesn't turn out like that, at least not for most of the people.

There seems to be something wrong with my GFC or Blogger, I tried to follow your blog yesterday, but couldn't & today managed, but still without profile pic. Hmm, weird.

    3. I know exactly what you mean, I've been trying to follow some blogs and it says 'following done' most of the times but when I get back to them, I have to follow them again. Maybe it's a bug?

  6. You do make valid points. I think people look for variety and change. There are too many bloggers wearing the same things and those that rock the elusive chanels & louis seem to be the grass that is greener. I am more interested in authenticity, and style though.
